Duck ‘n Great Pinot Tasting
Duck ‘n Great Pinot Tasting
Saturday 9th June 11am ~ 3pm $35 per person
Off the back of our highly successful Picpoul & Oyster tasting we’ve been consistently asked “when’s your next event?” Well the time has come, Saturday June 9th it is, and this time the focus will be on the seductive pairing of Duck and Pinot. So whether we’re discovering new and emerging producers or winding back the clock to revisit an old favourite, it gives us the perfect excuse to line up a selection of great Pinot while indulging the delectable delights of duck done three ways. We’ll be visiting the Aussie Pinot Mecca’s of Mornington Peninsula and Tasmania while opening the doors of discovery to the brand new region of Colac (150km south-west of Melbourne). The team from Urbane will be dazzling the palate with delicious plates of peking duck pancakes, duck consommé and roast duck as you taste your way through the intriguing line up of Pinot from the likes of Moorooduc, Sailor Seeks Horse and Irrewarra. We’d love for you to join us on our Duck n’ Great journey anytime between 11am and 3pm.
Can’t make tasting but would love to try the wines, then simply order from the selection below:
2016 Moorooduc Estate Devil Bend Creek Pinot Noir Mornington Peninsula ~ $27/btl
Winery Note
A delicious expression of cool climate grapes – pure, varietal wines that are perfect any day of the week, with a wide variety of dishes. A delicious, dark fruited pinot noir. Purple garnet in colour with a rich perfume of violets and dark ripe cherries. A touch of exotic pomegranate molasses and Mediterranean spice adds complexity to the nose, and follows through on the palate. Plush and juicy on the palate, with tangy orange notes and firm but silky tannins.
2015 Moorooduc Estate The Moorooduc McIntyre Pinot Noir Mornington Peninsula ~ $62/btl
Huon Hooke – The Real Review – #2 of 99 2015 Mornington Pinots tasted – 96 points
Deepish red/purple colour youthful and fresh, the bouquet of black cherry laced with a subtle hint of mint, likewise bright and fresh. It has lavish fruit and ample soft tanins, the shape rounded and mouthfilling, the tannins silky-soft and melting. A full-bodied pinot that will age superbly. Drink 2018 to 2032.
James Halliday – 97 Points
Seven clones (MV6, 115, 114, 777, 667, Abel and Pommard), hand-picked, destemmed, wild yeast open-fermented, 19-21 days on skins, matured in French oak (21% new). The bouquet is pure and perfumed, the palate pure silk with wild strawberry and red cherry fruits so intense they all but hid the complex fabric underneath. The balance and length are such that you might think the wine has arrived at its destination, but it has years before all of its secondary fruits can be explored.
2016 Sailor Seeks Horse Pinot Noir Tasmania ~ $52/btl
Campbell Mattinson – The Wine Front – 95 points
Some of Tasmania’s finest. It only sees 5% whole bunches but there’s oodles of spice here. It makes such an excellent impression. Smoky and sweet at once, ripe and tangy too. It’s a savoury style but there’s far more to it than that. Tannin curls and cuts as it tightens and pulls. We call it cherry red and black and sometimes plum but it tastes more so of pinot noir. An infusion of sweet, roasted nuts. Beautiful! Drink 2018 – 2026.
2015 By Farr Irrewarra Pinot Noir Colac ~ $59/btl
Ralph Kyte-Powell – The Age – 94 points
From a vineyard near Colac, in Victoria’s Western District, and made by Pinot expert Nick Farr, this superb young Pinot fits the bill for Peking duck at a celebratory dinner. Perfumed with floral scents, plum, cherry, spice and a hint of hoisin, it’s silky and intense, with delicious balance of ripe fruit, zesty acidity and superfine tannins. Lovely.
