Aussie Day Corkers!
Several years ago our colleague laid on the table a prediction…that within the next couple of years a Grenache would win the Jimmy Watson Trophy! Then ‘BAM’ it happened with the 2016 Turkey Flat Grenache scooping the pool with the 2017 gong. Genius or insider knowledge?
Since then we’ve showcased a number of highly rated Grenache wines and seen the varietal grow in quality with many consumers drawn towards the bright fruited, savoury mid-palate weight option often spoken as McLaren Vale and Barossa’s version of Pinot Noir…
American critic James Suckling’s platform recently launched their Top 100 wines for 2021 (scored by Aussie scribe Nick Stock). Four Grenache wines ranked in the top 50 so clearly the Grenache Star is on the rise and here’s a cracker from boutique McLaren Vale producer Vanguardist with their 2020 Vanguardist Blewitt Springs Grenache.
Continuing the theme of what grows best within each Australian viticultural region, we’re thrilled to present this WA bellringer (that’s Western Australia not Wineaway). The West has been blessed with consistently outstanding vintage conditions since 2007 and with Chardonnay and Cabernet being the Kings of the region we thought this Chardonnay was a no brainer. Showing all the hallmarks of great WA Chardonnay the 2019 Fermoy Estate Reserve Chardonnay will not disappoint unless you pause and miss the boat as there’s just 6 x 6pks for Qld and we grabbed the lot.
So raise a glass to two ripper Aussies and Happy Australia Day!
