Tasting Notes

Always tricky reviewing just bottled (couple of weeks) baby wines like these; they build up and improve dramatically over a few years. Still, so far, so good. My two boys, Charles and Eddie, born in 2007 and 2011 respectively, have done well out of the Hunter Valley. Pissed it down after they both popped out late Spring – pretty much no Shiraz picked in 2008 and 2012. The little buggers. It’s a different style of 4 Acres, yet still identifiably familiar – a little of 2006 and perhaps a little of 2004 – yet not quite either. Cranberry, blackberry and boysenberry, stalk/menthol, pepper (white) and latent violet perfume – subtle red earth. It’s just to medium bodied, pure and fresh, but quite tannic this vintage – not just built on acid this time – with open weave grainy tannin contributing significantly to structure. Almost more like a Pinot Noir than Shiraz with an equally fine fanning and sustained finish. One of our unique Australian wines. Wine Front
